Hedge trimming and pruning, what is the difference?
Trimming:This is Light, regular cutting to maintain shape and neatness. It is typically done once or twice a year. It is ideal for formal hedges like box, privet, yew.
Pruning:This is selective removal of branches to improve structure, health, and density. It is often done during dormant seasons or after flowering.
Generally the hedges need to be trimmed in late summer or winter, avoiding the March–August bird nesting season.
Evergreen (Privet, Laurel, Yew) need to be trimmed in late spring and late summer. They will respond well to gentle, regular trimming.
Deciduous (Beech, Hawthorn) need to be trimmed in late summer. The beech holds brown leaves over winter if trimmed late.
Newly planted hedges need only formative pruning for the first 2–3 years to define their shape.
